Sci-Fi Drama and Sonic Intensity

Calva Louise consists of Jess Allanic from Venezuela on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Alizon Taho from France on bass and backing vocals, and New Zealander Ben Parker on drums and backing vocals. ‘Under the Skin’ was co-written with Pendulum’s Gareth McGrillen, and features a compelling mix of metal riffs, electronica, and versatile vocals, ranging from ethereal to intense howls.

The video introduces a complex Sci-Fi narrative, a conceptual story involving characters and their counterparts known as the Doubles. Jess Allanic explains:

“The lyrics deal with the obstacles that arise between them as one is looking for freedom and the other is looking to perpetuate their consciousness, but the expectations are not the same for both sides.”

Directed and edited by Jess Allanic, the video is a Sci-Fi short film that explores themes of parallel dimensions and the quest to extend consciousness beyond the physical realm.

This duality concept is also explored through the lore of their music, depicting a battle for life energy between avatars known as Travellers and their Doubles, against hybrids that are part organic and part machine. This narrative extends to involve Commanders working to bridge these worlds, as described in the songs ‘THIRD CLASS CITIZEN’ and ‘SQUARE ONE‘.

Upon signing with Mascot Records, the band states:

We are honoured to be part of the Mascot family, and with their help, we hope to keep developing a high level of immeasurable value for the distribution and promotion of our music around the world through a unique sound for our next album and for our live shows.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is set to file an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation potentially as soon as next month, according to both The Wall Street Journal and Axios.

U.S. Department of Justice Prepares Live Nation Lawsuit

According to the reports, the lawsuit alleges that Live Nation has engaged in anti-competitive practices aimed at stifling competition within the live event ticketing industry. The DOJ’s concerns centre on whether Live Nation has adhered to a consent decree established during its merger with Ticketmaster back in 2010.

The agreement included stipulations that Live Nation would not retaliate against venues that chose to use ticketing services other than Ticketmaster by restricting their access to tours promoted by Live Nation.

The Department of Justice first opened an antitrust investigation into Live Nation in early 2022 which followed a previous inquiry in 2018 where the DOJ found evidence suggesting non-compliance by Live Nation with the original consent decree.

A subsequent settlement in 2019 led to an extension of the decree until 2025 and required Live Nation to compensate the Justice Department for the costs of the investigation. Additionally, the DOJ has examined various other practices of Live Nation, including such practices as dynamic pricing, resale policies, exclusive agreements with venues mandating the use of Ticketmaster, and exclusive contracts with touring artists.

The inquiry aims to assess the extent of Ticketmaster’s control over the concert ticketing market, with reports suggesting it could command as much as 80% of the U.S. market for primary ticket sales.

In response to the allegations, a representative from Live Nation/Ticketmaster stated to The Wall Street Journal:

Ticketmaster has more competition today than it has ever had, and the deal terms with venues show it has nothing close to monopoly power.

The Kris Barras Band, known for their invigorating hard rock style, are currently sitting at No.4 in the mid-weeks of the Official UK Album Charts for their new album ‘Halo Effect’ out now via Earache Records.

Halo Effect Influences

Halo Effect was recorded at Vada Recording Studios in Worcestershire and co-produced by Kris Barras, speaking about the album, Kris states:

There is a strong rock & metal influence throughout the album and there’s also some progressive elements with some odd time riffs and experimental midsections. There are even some melodies and production ideas not dissimilar to what a lot of the modern metalcore bands are doing. Musically, this album is a lot more riff- and groove-based. ‘Halo Effect’ still keeps the essence of what Kris Barras Band is: big riffs and even bigger choruses. It’s just that, this time, we’ve turned everything up to 11 and beefed it up!

Primordial General Mayhem

Primordial Radio is hugely excited to announce the return of the Primordial General Mayhem 2024 with dynamic and hard-hitting five-piece retro-rockers THE TREATMENT headlining the Friday night.

Joining them are the Brighton-based punk-rock aficionados THE BAR STOOL PREACHERS, alongside energetic South Wales rockers JAMES & THE COLD GUN and hard rock sensations FURY, who made a remarkable impression last year by drawing an overwhelming crowd to the festival’s smaller stage.

Kris Barras Saves The PGM

If you attended the Primordial General Mayhem in 2022, you will remember just how close we were to having to cancel the festival. One week before the event, disaster struck as both of our headlining acts announced they had to pull out due to sickness and injury, leaving the PGM on the precipice of disintegrating.

Yet, as fortune would appear, we were saved by both Florence Black and Kris Barras who not only stepped up to the challenge; but exceeded all of our expectations.

The PGM went ahead as planned and had everyone bouncing throughout the entire weekend with both bands winning over a ton of new fans in the Primordial community and forever being a part of our shared history and story.

Riding High In The Charts

Halo Effect, builds on their previous work, offering a heavier sound compared to their last album Death Valley Paradise which achieved a Top 30 spot in the UK Album Chart. Halo Effect offers fans impactful riffs, compelling choruses, and technically impressive solos to boot.

Remarkably they are currently battling it out against the likes of Beyonce, Linkin Park and James.

To help support Kris Barras and rock music breaking into the charts, you can download the album starting at £4.99 from all major platforms here.

We are excited to announce our support for our charity partner, Metal For Good, during this year’s Primordial General Mayhem happening on the 26th and 27th of April at KK’s Steel Mill in Wolverhampton.

It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy great live music, and support a noble cause.

Support Through Donation

Metal For Good is dedicated to using music as a transformative power to better lives. They offer grants to community projects that harness the joy and connectivity of music. This year, they’re running a special pre-loved merch and clothing charity drive during the PGM, and your participation could make a huge difference!

Wondering how to contribute? It’s simple: dig through your wardrobe for any old band merch, patches, or denim and leather jackets (Looking at you 80’s Dads) that you no longer use. Instead of letting them collect dust and regret from that extra drink you definitely shouldn’t have had, bring them to the PGM, look for the Metal For Good stand at KK’s Steel Mill and drop off your items there.

By doing this, you’re not just clearing out your wardrobe; you’re participating in a cycle of generosity that benefits a variety of community projects.

The modern rock scene presents a plethora of challenges and opportunities for emerging bands. Enter Two Year Break, a band that has recently captured the spotlight, offering a fascinating glimpse into this ever-changing landscape.

Two Year Break’s recent success in our poll to open the Mascot Records stage at PGM24 was a fierce and tight competition, underscoring the high quality and calibre of bands emerging in the scene in 2024.

Singer, Brad Howard, shared his experience of the tense moments leading to their win. “I got a bit obsessive over it, just watching it and being interested in the percentages going up”.

Evolution and Challenges of a Band from Essex

Two Year Break’s origins are deeply intertwined with personal relationships and expanding musical interests. Brad explains how the interaction between the current band lineup was a by-product of friendships and unforeseen coincidences, adding that the band members have brought various influences to the table.

While the band started as indie rock and pop punk, it gradually adapted more and more metal and electronic influences. Regarding their music and genre, singer Brad and drummer George Lilley note that it’s hard to step out of a place like Essex, not traditionally seen as a rock breeding ground, the close proximity to London often means a large portion of the talent moves to London for exposure.

George Lilley: I think people tend to go to London. Essex used to have a decent scene, but everyone just goes from Essex to London because it’s so close. So you don’t really see much happening in Essex.

Brad Howard: I think back in 2013 to 2016, there was a solid metal and rock scene in the Brentwood area. Do you remember the band Create To Inspire? They were a band that came out of Essex and were doing really well. Sean from the band performed on one of our songs at the Underworld recently. I do think the early 2010s, was quite significant. But as we moved into our 20s, that scene disappeared. We’re not as involved, so we might not be aware that it still exists, but I’d say the music where we live has shifted more towards a pop rave scene than rock.

There’s a smaller group of people into that music. I remember we used to go to a rock club every Friday back in 2015, and it was always packed. It was always the same people who loved metal, and we went to the same place all the time. It wasn’t just because we were getting older; there were simply fewer people going as time went on. It’s always hard to gauge, isn’t it?

Live Shows & Keeping The Crowd Energized

Discussing the band’s philosophy towards live shows, Brad stresses the need for engagement and an energetic attitude. “If you’re not having a fun time, everyone else won’t be having a fun time”  he comments, explaining the necessity for a band to be actively engaged in crowd participation to get the most out of an opening slot at a festival.

Reflecting on their recent show at The Underworld in London, Brad states:

I really enjoyed that Underworld show and I’m actually happy it wasn’t 100 percent sold out. It was very close, but I think if it was completely sold out, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much if I were a punter in the venue watching the band. I’ve taken video and photo for other bands at that place, and the level we had it at is almost where it starts to get a bit too much and you can’t move around. I like that people could still move; they weren’t squished between each other. So, while it would have been nice to have it sold out, at the end of the day, as long as it’s a good show and it’s a decent-sized room that people have turned up to, I’m happy with that.

Unpacking ‘Take It Down’: An Anthem of Liberation and Joy

Speaking about the band’s latest single ‘Take It Down’ Brad sheds light on the deeper meaning of the song stating:

It’s a beautiful song. It is about being at live venues and being pumped and excited and feeling like you’re around like-minded people in a safe space where you can just be yourself and rock out to music. That’s essentially what Take It Down is about—letting go and just being okay with just dancing and enjoying music in your own way that you’d like to. It touches upon being okay with just trying to be happy and letting all the bad things…not let them control who you are, like, accept them for what they are, and get out of that bad headspace.

The song also features an intriguing music video that, according to Brad: “Doesn’t make any sense, but does have lightsabers in it!”. This fun element aligns with the band’s philosophy of mixing fun with meaningful messages, engaging listeners in a more light-hearted, yet impactful way.

‘Take It Down’ serves not only as an anthem for the live setting but also as a reminder of the power of music to transform and uplift spirits in times of collective struggle and personal reflection. As Two Year Break prepares to bring their vibrant energy to the Primordial General Mayhem ‘Take It Down’ stands as a testament to their ability to blend potent lyrical content with compelling live performances.

We can’t wait to give them a huge Primordial welcome, they just best bring those lightsabers!

Rock music in 2024 is varied, to say the least, ask 10 people what rock music is and you’ll get 10 totally different answers, it’s in this space that James and The Cold Gun stands out as a burgeoning band refusing to be put into rigid boundaries and categories.

Their music, described by frontman James Joseph as a blend that defies easy comparison, carries the freewheeling essence of garage rock infused with punk’s visceral edge. It’s a sound that has earned them spots supporting iconic acts such as Guns N’ Roses at Hyde Park, a monumental step for the band, which James charmingly chalks up to opportune moments of outreach, or “firing shots,” during downtime.

From Garage Grit to Hyde Park

Speaking to Punktatstic, Joseph states:

I do this thing whenever I get too much time where I’m not busy, and I send these chance sort of messages – ‘firing shots’ as they call it. I never know if it’s a bit naive or childish. It reminds me of when I was in my first band when I was fifteen and you’re sending your links to everyone and most people want you to fuck off! I screen-shotted the poster [for British Summer Time] and sent it to our agent, and captioned it ‘this would be good’…well, fucking obviously this would be good! Then she was like, ‘I’ll see what I can do!’ What, really? We’ll play for free in the car park!

While large stages offer grandeur, James personally finds the smaller venues more rewarding.

To be honest, from our experience, my favourite shows are always the smaller ones, because there is that ‘lightning in a bottle’ kind of feeling, being able to get really stuck in. You can sense if it’s going well and I’m feeding off the energy. These are all cliched things but it’s true!

Garage Rock Revival: A Lockdown Genesis

The emergence of James and the Cold Gun as a significant new force in the rock scene might seem surprising given the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, for James Joseph and fellow band member James Bliss, the lockdown period provided an unexpected opportunity to redefine their musical careers and create something profoundly energizing.

James recalls to Soundsphere the early days of the band’s formation with nostalgia and a touch of amusement.

We purely started jamming for fun. We would go to the garage, he’d jump on the drums, and I’d jump on the guitar. We’d play awful versions of Foo Fighters songs, Queens of the Stone Age and really bad versions of Nirvana and stuff.

And then we both kind of realised, ‘Oh, this is so much fun’. It reminded us of when were in high school, in a practice room just hashing it out!

Now, with their self-titled debut album released James and the Cold Gun are ready to share their creations with the wider world. “I’ve been wanting to show people these songs for the best part of the year now,” James admits, expressing both relief and excitement about the album’s release.

Charting Success with Authentic Rock

The band’s ethos is firmly rooted in playing music they genuinely enjoy, a sentiment encapsulated in their track ‘Headlights’, which James fondly describes as embodying their ideal mix of chaos and rock’n’roll swagger.

Their rapid ascent from garage band sessions to sharing stages with icons like Guns N’ Roses and The Darkness is no small feat. James attributes this success to being proactive, with a slightly cheeky approach to seizing opportunities. This blend of boldness and a bit of luck highlights the unconventional pathways to success in the modern music industry.

With stories circulating about explosive performances—literally, in the case of a rumoured speaker incident at a house party. James relishes these growing urban legends, seeing them as part of the band’s mystique and appeal.

James and the Cold Gun represent a new chapter in rock, defined by authenticity, raw energy, and a clear vision for their music. As they continue to navigate the complexities of the music industry, they remain guided by a simple yet powerful philosophy shared by James, inspired by Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl:

“When you’re playing music that you love and you’re enjoying it… then you’ve succeeded.”

This approach is not just a marketing strategy but a testament to the enduring allure of making music that resonates deeply with both the band and their fans.

We can’t wait to have James and The Cold Gun join us at the General Mayhem for their very first Primordial performance!

As evening fell and the clock struck 7:30pm, the line to get into the Primordial Presents stage at the PGM 2023 was stretching back to the bar for the much-anticipated performance of Fury.

Known for their electrifying live sets, Fury’s music resonates with the heavy riffs and theatrics from some of rock and metal’s most iconic bands; Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Meat Loaf have all had indelible impacts on Fury’s sound and ethos. This connection created a delightful atmosphere of fun rock and timeless metal that had the crowd at PGM 2023 energetically bouncing in a frenzy of metal mayhem.

Echoes of Giants: Fury’s Heavy Metal Roots

Metallica and Iron Maiden stand as pillars in the pallet of Fury’s musical identity. In a conversation with Roctavia bassist Becky Baldwin states:

Metallica is definitely a big influence, as well as Iron Maiden. Those are the kind of bands that we sound most similar to. There’s also some Meat Loaf influences there, something very theatrical and a bit over the top. For myself, Metallica was a big band that I was super into growing up and Black Sabbath, another big one for me as a bass player. My two favorite bassists are Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath and Cliff Burton from Metallica, so they definitely influence my style. Our vocalist, Julian, writes most of our songs and he’s a big Metallica fan as well. That’s the kind of thing we’re trying to get out of the band really.

I’ve been playing bass for about 17 or 18 years now. I guess there have been times when it hasn’t been my main priority, even though I’ve always wanted to do it. As soon as I picked it up, it was clear this is what I want to do forever. I started wanting to learn because some of my friends were learning guitar and I got into rock music and punk. Suddenly, Metallica was on TV and I was exposed to all these music videos I had never seen before. So, I decided to try the bass instead of guitar, inspired by other bass players in the bands I liked.

I think the first gig I went to on my own was Motorhead, with Girlschool supporting them. That was the first time I saw women playing instruments live on stage, which was different from seeing Nightwish with just a female singer. Watching Girlschool and then seeing Joan Jett years later made me realize that I could do this. Watching a band, I often imagine myself in their place, thinking I could jump up and play a song with them.

Fury’s music is marked by continuing collaboration, with lead singer Julian playing a key role in the songwriting process. The band’s shared appreciation for Metallica helps to create a cohesive sound that breathes new life into the classic sound of heavy metal.

Intertwined with personal stories of musical discovery and ambition, Fury is not only influenced by their musical inspirations but also by a love for live performances and a strong connection with their fans.

Fury’s Fiery Comeback at Bloodstock & Beyond

Following a hiatus from live music since 2019, Fury re-ignited their live shows when they were called upon to open the Sophie Lancaster Stage at Bloodstock Festival 2021, speaking to Metal Talk Becky says:

We hadn’t gigged at all since 2019 at that point. So it was a little bit ropy in 2021. We were so happy that we were invited back in 2023 because it meant we could do it again and make songs sound the way we really wanted them to be played. It got filmed professionally and there’s a great video of our performance from that year. We were halfway through our biggest touring year ever, so we were working like a well-oiled machine.

Despite not being the heaviest band on the bill, Fury continues to bring big crowds at festivals like Bloodstock:

The turnouts were always really good, but I think it’s the kind of band that you might want to see at a festival. It’s kind of fun. You don’t need to be a super fan to enjoy the live show because it is fast and engaging, and I guess there’s enough breadth of genre and style there.

With their ability to attract large festival crowds both in the UK and internationally, Fury’s unwavering dedication and sincere love for live music, along with the strong connection with their fans, showcase an enduring spirit for the timeless and vibrant world of heavy metal in 2024.

Embracing Change: Fury’s Path in the Music Industry

In the constantly changing world of the music industry, bands often struggle to stay true to their sound while appealing to broader audiences. In a visit to Stompbox Studios in South Wales, where they recorded a single under the supervision of Todd Campbell, Becky says to Metal Talk:

We started to think about changing our approach to the recording. We really loved the sound of the last couple of albums, but some people have said we sound different. Very different live than we do on the recording. So, we were thinking maybe we should try something different to freshen up the sound a bit more.

When we heard that Todd Campbell from Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons had a studio, we thought that would probably be a good place to start because we are getting on with them well, and their latest album [Kings Of The Asylum] sounds great. We thought we would give it a go.

As 2024 approaches and Becky balances bass duties for Fury and now Mercyful Fate, the anticipation for new music from both bands continues to grow:

Hopefully, this year, we will get at least one single out with Mercyful Fate, but the album will probably be the following year (2025). Then there’ll be a big tour of Europe, America, and South America. So, there’s still quite a lot of time. But there isn’t a lot of Mercyful Fate work for me to get on with now. It’s just kind of catching up with the demos because it’s all new to me.

In the meantime, I’ll work on Fury stuff where I can over the next year or two until we’ve got the big Mercyful Fate tour. But everything’s planned well in advance. Everything’s scheduled as it needs to be. It means that I can manage the Fury schedule as well. And because I’m in charge of the Fury schedule, that makes things easy.

Fury’s progression exemplifies a wider story within the rock and metal scene in 2024; blending innovation with tradition by honouring the pioneers who paved the way, exploring fresh concepts, and recognizing the importance of nurturing a deep bond with your fans.

Triple J: Can you talk about the idea of Eve and how it plays a role in your show? Where did the idea come from?

Oli Sykes: Initially, Eve was just something we thought we’d do for Reading and Leeds, but it quickly took on a life of its own. This narrative started forming and influenced our next record more than I thought it would. Eve essentially became this very important entity for the show, and I thought we could actually carry on a story here. The kids seem to love the immersiveness of it. It’s really turned into a significant part of the narrative in our new album, serving as a good plot device for the themes and messages I’m trying to convey on a personal level. It’s turned into something that feels more like a story or a video game or a movie.

Triple J: Do you think the live shows you’ve been doing lately have changed the trajectory of the album in any way?

Oli Sykes: It was weird because when we did “Survival Horror,” we hadn’t been playing shows due to lockdown, so that record was made without any live feel. But this next one, you do feel certain tempos or bounce and how people react to things live, which influences us. Honestly, a lot of the stuff we’ve been doing recently is just we make it, and then we worry about how it’s going to translate live. But yes, it does usually influence us on some level, especially because I’ve been writing on tour as well. So, there’s actually a lot more time to write than you might think. We play for an hour and a half at night, so we do have a full day, though it’s not as much time as you’d think with press and other day activities.

Triple J: Twenty years on from your first EP, it seems like Bring Me the Horizon is stronger than ever. How do each of you feel at this point in your career?

Matt Nicholls: Well, we’re feeling older now, but honestly, we all feel pretty good. It’s surprising where we can take it from here. Twenty years this month actually since we’ve been a band and played our first show. We didn’t even think we’d still be around 20 months later, let alone 20 years. But it’s just that old saying, you just gotta ride the wave and see where it takes you. Fortunately for us, it’s taken us 20 years down the line. We’re all a bit older, a bit achier, but we’re still good.

Oli Sykes: Right, I’d say we’re happier than we’ve ever been as a unit. The vibe is so good. Creatively, we’ve learned so much over these 20 years, especially in the last five years when things were getting really big for us. We’ve learned a lot of lessons about who we want to be and how we want to play this game. We’ve found a really good spot where the creation of our music and everything we put out is the most important thing, over fame, success, money, all that kind of stuff. We’re in a real good spot where we just like, we’ve had a taste of that world and realized that at the end of the day, when this is all done, we want to look back and be proud of the work we did because that’s all we really care about.

You can watch the full interview below.

Bring Me The Horizon have also recently released a teaser for the new album stating “It’s time for a new era.” Delayed since August 2023, POST HUMAN: NeX GEn is slated for a summer 2024 release.

Kyle Gass of Tenacious D has shared updates on the band’s forthcoming album in a recent interview with Loudwire Nights, saying it could be completed in 2024. The last album to come from Jack Black and Kyle Gass as part of Tenacious D was 2018’s “Post-Apocalypto”.

“We have to finish the new record. We’ve been working on it, we have a very strict six-year cycle…I think we might be a little overdue. We gotta do it this year. We can feel the heat too, but you know, it’s gotta percolate. We got to fit in between Jack’s very busy film schedule. But we’re going to do it.”
