Holding Absence have returned with a stunning new song called ‘Whisper Of A Dream’.
This is a band that’s always made music full of big emotions, and since they came out of Cardiff and built their career with their self-titled debut in 2019, The Greatest Mistake Of My Life in 2021, and The Noble Art Of Self-Destruction in 2023, they’ve found a way for post-hardcore, atmosphere, and emotional honesty to all be in the same room without cancelling each other out.
Whisper Of A Dream is their first new music in three years, their first release on Sumerian Records, and the first real look at what comes after that trilogy.
Music In A Synthetic World
The first line, “A shadow in the darkness, a whisper of a dream”, makes it feel like the band is reaching for something that is half-lost but still worth believing in.
That makes sense for Holding Absence as their front-man, Lucas Woodland, has written a lot about emotional breakdown, self-reflection, and the hard work of trying to get back to normal. But Whisper Of A Dream puts that fight in a colder world. There are neon reflections, mannequins, fading memories, and an “underwater scream” all contained within the song. It doesn’t feel like it’s made of flesh and blood, but more like a mind trying to stay human inside something fake.
And that’s exactly the point… Woodland said that the song draws heavily from cyberpunk media, with themes of thinking, being aware, and dreaming in a world that is always changing.
Whisper Of A Dream is our first song back in what feels like forever. After releasing our third record, The Noble Art Of Self-Destruction, it felt essential to step away for a while – to take stock and rediscover who we are as a band.
Whisper felt like the perfect song to return with. In many ways, it represents everything Holding Absence has always been, while introducing new elements to our sound and opening the door to what comes next.
Lyrically and conceptually, the song draws heavily from cyberpunk media. Contemplation, sentience and dreaming in an ever-evolving world. The music video also introduces our robot mascot “Y4-BB0”, a character you’ll be seeing more of in the coming years.
But beneath the sci-fi surface, this is still Holding Absence at their core. It’s about identity, isolation and the burden of consciousness. What gives the song another layer is the timing. Since the last album, Woodland has also spoken out against AI-generated music after an artificial band, “Bleeding Verse”, openly modelled themselves on bands like Holding Absence and would then overtake them in monthly Spotify listeners.
Suddenly, a song about sentience, dreaming and what it means to be human lands with even more force. Whisper Of A Dream is not reacting to that story directly, but it arrives in a moment where real artists are having to defend the value of human feeling, human imperfection and human creation.

The Meaning Behind The Dream
So, the meaning behind Holding Absence’s Whisper Of A Dream lyrics lies in that tension. It’s a song about feeling small, fragile and half-lost in an increasingly unreal world, but still refusing to let go of hope.
For a band returning after time away, and doing so in the shadow of AI music’s rise, that message feels especially sharp. The dream may be distant, but Holding Absence still believe it’s worth chasing.
