Metallica frontman James Hetfield recently visited a Ukrainian soldier who was brought to Vail, Colorado for medical treatment. The soldier, Roman Denysiuk, was assisted by a locally-founded non-profit called Limbs For Liberty. Kelli Rohrig, co-founder of Limbs For Liberty, requested that Hetfield pay a visit to the patient. After meeting Denysiuk and Igor Voinyi, Hetfield left a sticky note on Rohrig’s car saying, “You made my day.”
It was unexpected said Voinyi. I didn’t even believe it was him at first. It was very brief, but it was a warm meeting. It would be great to meet him around a campfire and have a drink, rather than at the hospital.
Limbs For Liberty partners with physicians and physical therapists to provide prosthetics to Ukrainians who have lost their limbs in war. Unlike other non-profits, Limbs For Liberty does not accept any money for their efforts. In fact, Rohrig and her husband have spent around $30,000 on multiple trips to Ukraine and related expenses, according to The Aspen Times.

I’ve always been fascinated by people who are willing to risk their lives to assist others she told Vail magazine. So, when the war started, I thought this was the moment to go and assist the people, and that’s exactly what I did.
