A newly discovered song by Johnny Cash, titled “Spotlight” (Listen Below) will be included in the late musician’s forthcoming posthumous album, Songwriter.
A Warm, Mid-tempo Bluesy Track
Featuring Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys on guitar, “Spotlight” is a warm, mid-tempo bluesy track that showcases Cash’s distinctive baritone voice. The song also includes an impressive guitar solo by Auerbach, enriched with string flourishes, strutting bongos, and majestic production elements. The track is available for streaming below.
Johnny Cash originally wrote and recorded “Spotlight” during a demo session in 1993. His son, John Carter Cash, revived the vocals and arrangement for the new album. “Spotlight” is the second single released from Songwriter, following the earlier single “Well Alright.” All songs on Songwriter were solely written by Johnny Cash.
Dan Auerbach expressed his excitement about participating in the project:

“It was the thrill of a lifetime to be able to play guitar on a Johnny Cash song. Hearing his voice through the speakers in my studio sent chills down my spine. I can’t thank John Carter and Fergie enough for including me.”
John Carter Cash, co-producer of Songwriter alongside David “Fergie” Ferguson, shared similar sentiments: “It was great to have Dan be a part of ‘Spotlight’ and to add his guitar tones and his sounds to this incredible song. I think it really opened it up into a different direction.”
In addition to Auerbach’s contribution, the 11-track album features collaborations with Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Marty Stuart, Pete Abbott, the late Dave Roe, and other Nashville musicians. Songwriter will be released on June 28th.
