After years of anticipation and speculation, the iconic heavy metal mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” is set to receive a sequel. Variety has confirmed that filming has commenced in New Orleans, bringing to light several exciting developments regarding the project.
Rob Reiner Returns To Spinal Tap
Rob Reiner returns as the director, reassembling the beloved core trio of Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. These actors will reprise their roles as the members of Spinal Tap, a band known for its humorous mishaps and perpetual crises. Reiner will also revisit his role as Marty DiBergi, the dedicated documentarian capturing the band’s escapades.
Reiner shared his enthusiasm about reprising his role, conveying Marty DiBergi’s (Reiner’s character) eagerness to join the band once more. He humorously noted that DiBergi is taking a sabbatical from his academic position at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to document Spinal Tap’s journey, aiming to secure their legacy in rock and roll history.
Reiner’s statement highlighted the blend of humour and dedication that has made the original film a cult classic:

“I recently spoke to Marty DiBergi who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor’s Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of Rock and Roll.”
The sequel’s storyline, crafted by the original cast and director, focuses on a discontent Spinal Tap reuniting for a final performance due to a dubious contractual requirement. Additionally, tensions appear to be brewing between the band and DiBergi over his portrayal of their previous, disastrous American tour.
Adding to the excitement, the sequel will feature an impressive array of cameos from music industry titans, including Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Garth Brooks. Recent announcements have also confirmed appearances by Questlove and Trisha Yearwood.
As the sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap” progresses, fans of the original mockumentary can look forward to a humorous and touching homage to rock and roll’s most endearingly fictional band.
