Spiritbox have returned with ‘Mourning’, their first new music since 2025’s Tsunami Sea, and rather than immediately diving into the crushing weight of songs like ‘Soft Spine’, the Canadian metallers have pulled things inward.

Formed in 2017 by Courtney LaPlante and Mike Stringer, Spiritbox have built a reputation for not comfortably fitting into one version of heavy music. ‘Mourning’ continues that evolution, LaPlante’s clean vocals front and centre, slowly surrounded by layers of atmosphere, guitars and percussion as the song begins to swell to fit the arenas they’re now moving into.

Spiritbox Enter Their Next Chapter

When we spoke to Mike Stringer earlier this year, he was already thinking beyond Tsunami Sea. New music, it seemed, was never particularly far away…

The thing is, I love making music and I get all my fulfillment from that aspect of it. The touring side is such a huge bonus to be able to go out and play for everybody who’s stoked to be there and everything. That’s incredible, but I love making songs and being in the studio and so there’s always stuff laying around. There’s always stuff on the horizon.

‘Mourning’ is our first glimpse of what was sitting on that horizon. Lyrically, the song revolves around absence and the refusal to allow that absence to become final. LaPlante hears someone “call at my window just like a mourning dove”, before admitting it cuts through “a feeling I can’t feel anymore.”

And there’s a nice tension running between morning and mourning. LaPlante waits by the window until dawn, but is still emotionally stuck in mourning. Even the line “My denial stops the wheel” implies someone actively stopping the natural process of loss from moving forward.

The devastating payoff comes at the end: “My denial keeps you here”.

Ultimately, Spiritbox’s ‘Mourning’ is about the meaning of grief, stuck between acceptance and denial. Whether that loss is death, separation or something more personal is left deliberately unresolved; what matters is the contradiction fundamentally. The denial hurts the narrator, but it also keeps the connection alive.

Following the darkness of Tsunami Sea, ‘Mourning’ doesn’t feel like Spiritbox are leaving that world behind, but more like shedding some of its armour for what comes next as they begin their transition into becoming an arena headlining band.
