When Metallica recorded Ride The Lightning at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen in early 1984, they were broke, homesick and sharpening their identity at a frightening pace.

Although it was just their second record, it showed them moving past the raw energy of Kill ’Em All and toward music blending fast tempos with deep feeling. Central to this change stands the title track “Ride the Lightning,” a stark story exploring helplessness, dread, while questioning the brutality of capital punishment.

Metallica’s Turning Point

Ride the Lightning emerged during a period when everything in Metallica’s world felt unstable. Their gear had been stolen weeks before, they were living off beer returns, and they slept on floors between overnight recording sessions.

The lyrical idea for the song started when Kirk Hammett read The Stand by Stephen King. He remembered seeing the phrase “Waiting to ride the lightning” in a part about someone on death row, speaking to Rolling Stone, he said:

I was reading The Stand by Stephen King, and there was this one passage where this guy was on death row said he was waiting to “ride the lightning.” I remember thinking, “Wow, what a great song title.” I told James, and it ended up being a song and the album title.

Whilst Hammet was the one who put pen to paper on Ride The Lightning, the original DNA came from collective writing sessions with former guitarist Dave Mustaine before he was fired on April 11, 1983. It was also the first album where Cliff Burton and Hammett contributed as writers, giving the band more melodic movement without sacrificing intensity.

Together with songs like Fade To Black, Ride The Lightning reflects this change. Instead of praising violence, Hetfield enters the mind of a condemned man, revealing how systems control life or death. His vocal fear sounds real, almost like the band’s personal dread about surviving found its image here.

Mustaine’s Return To The Storm

There’s also a modern take on the song’s story. Forty years on, Dave Mustaine returned to where it began, recording his take on Ride the Lightning for Megadeth’s new album. Speaking via Megadeth’s YouTube Channel, he said:

On the new album, we recorded Ride the Lightning and the reason we did it was obviously it’s a song I had a lot to do with writing it and James and I, when we were working on the song it became clear to me when James started playing the guitar how good of a guitar player he was. And I thought it would be cool to come full circle to show respect for playing the songs I wrote with Metallica and then… Honor our friendship even though it’s been strained and ruined by emotions over the years, when we weren’t necessarily friends.

But one thing I’ve always had is tremendous respect for James’ guitar playing, and Lars’ composition. So it was cool to do this and add it to the record. Well, we speed it up a little and well… Let’s play a little with the solo, and Teemu and I tossed it back n forth to each other.

So you might hear some little differences with the tempos and of course, I also sing differently than James. But once again it was about completing the circle and show what James and I as guitarists did to change the world.

Metallica Ride The Lightning Lyrics In Full

Verse 1: James Hetfield, James Hetfield & Cliff Burton
Guilty as charged, but damn it, it ain’t right
There’s someone else controlling me
Death in the air, strapped in the electric chair
This can’t be happening to me
Who made you God to say, “I’ll take your life from you”?

Chorus: James Hetfield
Flash before my eyes
Now it’s time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame

Verse 2: James Hetfield
Wait for the sign to flick the switch of death
It’s the beginning of the end
Sweat, chilling cold, as I watch death unfold
Consciousness, my only friend
My fingers grip with fear
What am I doing here?

Chorus: James Hetfield
Flash before my eyes
Now it’s time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame

Bridge: James Hetfield & Lars Ulrich
Someone help me
Oh please, God, help me
They’re trying to take it all away
I don’t want to die (Ah)

Bridge: James Hetfield & Lars Ulrich
Someone help me
Oh please, God, help me
They’re trying to take it all away
I don’t want to die (Ah)

Verse 3: James Hetfield
Time moving slow, the minutes seem like hours
The final curtain call I see
How true is this? Just get it over with
If this is true, just let it be
Wakened by horrid scream
Freed from this frightening dream
[Chorus: James Hetfield]
Flash before my eyes
Now it’s time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame
