It’s been a while since we last heard from Häxan. The Welsh rock band turned heads with their debut album White Noise back in 2020, and then, like many bands navigating post-pandemic reality, they went a bit quiet. But now they’ve returned with a new EP on the horizon, and its lead single “Death of Me” suggests they’ve used the time away to sharpen their edge.

The EP, also titled Death of Me, is due out May 23rd. And from the sound of this first track, Häxan aren’t exactly easing back into things, they’re kicking the door open with something heavier, darker, and more urgent than we’ve heard from them before.

Wrestling With the Shadows: Inside “Death of Me”

There’s a particular kind of tension baked into “Death of Me.” Lyrically, it leans into themes of inner conflict, betrayal, and the strange, quiet tug-of-war between giving up and pushing through. It’s intense without being melodramatic – raw in a way that feels lived-in, not theatrical.

The band described it as a song about “a struggle between wanting to break free and knowing you probably wouldn’t, even if you could.” That kind of emotional deadlock shows up in the track’s pacing, it pulses like a restless heartbeat. There’s desperation, but also defiance.

What stands out right away is the hook. It’s catchy, sure, but it’s also got that earworm quality that lives rent-free in your head long after the song ends. And that wasn’t by accident. According to the band: “Once we had this melody, albeit with very different words, we all couldn’t stop singing it days, even weeks, later so we knew it was the one.”

They also mentioned the song came later in the writing process, and you can kind of tell. It’s got that refined feel, like something they had to fight through to get right. Not overproduced, just tightly built. It hits in all the right places without losing that human looseness.
