The UK metal scene has always been a churning cauldron of genre-bending innovation, you only have to take a brief look at UK festival bills in 2025 to see this played out in front of our eyes.
Enter Waterlines: a blend of nu-metal nostalgia, EDM-infused chaos, and raw, unapologetic metalcore energy. They’re loud, they’re restless, and they’re making damn sure you know their name.
Formed in 2022, Waterlines have embraced the title “Northern Dirtbags” with pride. Hailing from the “Norf” of England, the group has rapidly become one of the most talked-about new names in British heavy music, not for any flashy gimmicks, but for their relentless energy and ability to turn any venue, tent, or corner of a festival into a whirlwind of bodies and sound, and fans are starting to take notice.
The Evolution of a Sound: Blending EDM with Metalcore Mayhem
It’s no easy task trying to stand out in a crowded field of metalcore bands. The genre has ballooned in diversity and saturation over the past decade, with artists pushing the boundaries in every direction – some leaning into technicality, others bathing in melody. What Waterlines have done, however, is carve out a space of their own by injecting the pulse of electronic music into a base of hardcore aggression.
Their music doesn’t sit comfortably in one lane. You’ll find traces of nu-metal, reminiscent of early 2000s Slipknot or Korn, but with a distinctly modern edge – synths and programming pulsing beneath razor-sharp guitar riffs and vocal lines that swing from guttural to soaring. This fusion could easily feel disjointed in the wrong hands, but for Waterlines, it’s a fluid, deliberate expression of their identity. It’s heavy, it’s danceable, and where many have failed in genre blending, it’s surprisingly cohesive.
Each release feels a little more refined, a little more daring. And for those who’ve caught them live, the records are just the beginning – because what really sets Waterlines apart isn’t just what they record, but how they perform it.
