International Women’s Day: Sam

There have been so many inspirational women in my life but one who has had a life-changing impact was my dear friend Nikki. If she was still here today, I would say…

“WOMAN! And then you would take over and tell me a story that would last 3 hours when really you could have told it in 30 minutes… And we would laugh, and you had the most infectious laugh and smile. When you got ill, you never let it get you down. You continued to live life to the full and even when you were really poorly with all your treatment you never complained, you just got on with it. You kept the hospice on their toes right until the end and were still boozing whenever you could. Losing you at just 41 was, and still is, heartbreaking. But as I headed towards 40, I realised life is definitely too short and while life continues to be challenging, you gave me the strength to make difficult decisions, put my needs first and live the life that I want, by my rules and spend time with the people I love, who love me. I hope I have done you proud and will continue to do so.”

I also could not let this occasion past by without mentioning my wonderful daughter Lydia, who just turned six and her namesake, Great Aunt Lydia who would have been 100 on 9 March. Sometimes I wish I hadn’t named my daughter after her as she is also feisty, occasionally stubborn but ever so smart, funny, and kind.
I also wanted to share this piece that I saw on Facebook last month for all the Gals in the Fam. Whether you believe in a God or not I thought these words were very powerful…

WOMAN. . . . . . . . .
When God created woman he was working late on the 6th day…….
An angel came by and asked.” Why spend so much time on her?”
The lord answered. “Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her?”
She must function on all kinds of situations,
She must be able to embrace several kids at the same time,
Have a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart,
She must do all this with only two hands,”
She cures herself when sick and can work 18 hours a day”
THE ANGEL was impressed” Just two hands…. impossible!
And this is the standard model?”
The Angel came closer and touched the woman”
“But you have made her so soft, Lord”.
“She is soft”, said the Lord,
“But I have made her strong. You can’t imagine what she can endure and overcome”
“Can she think?” The Angel asked…
The Lord answered. “Not only can she think, she can reason and negotiate”
The Angel touched her cheeks….
“Lord, it seems this creation is leaking! You have put too many burdens on her”
“She is not leaking…it is a tear” The Lord corrected the Angel…
“What’s it for?” Asked the Angel…
The Lord said. “Tears are her way of expressing her grief, her doubts, her love, her loneliness, her suffering and her pride.”…
This made a big impression on the Angel,
“Lord, you are a genius. You thought of everything.
A woman is indeed marvellous”
Lord said “Indeed she is.
She has strength that amazes a man.
She can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens.
She holds happiness, love and opinions.
She smiles when she feels like screaming.
She sings when she feels like crying, cries when happy and laughs when afraid.
She fights for what she believes in.
Her love is unconditional.
Her heart is broken when a next-of-kin or a friend dies but she finds strength to get on with life”
The Angel asked: So, she is a perfect being?
The lord replied: No. She has just one drawback
“She often forgets what she is worth”.
