Orange Goblin, the British stoner metal ensemble, is set to release their tenth studio album titled “Science, Not Fiction” on July 19th, courtesy of Peaceville Records. This album serves as the successor to their 2018 offering, “The Wolf Bites Back.” The recording process took place at Woodworm Studios in Oxfordshire, UK, under the guidance of producer Mike Exeter, renowned for his work with Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

Science, Not Fiction Set to Debut on July 19 via Peaceville Records

Ahead of the album’s release, the band unveiled a single, “(Not) Rocket Science,” accompanied by a lyric video (Watch Below) crafted by Matthew Vickerstaff. Vocalist Ben Ward shared his thoughts on the track, stating:

“It’s basically saying that life can be pretty simple and straightforward if you just stop wasting your time and make each day count. Be prepared to work hard, don’t expect any hand outs and basically enjoy yourself along the way. When Chris came up with the music he said it needed something that could be delivered in a Bon Scott / Lemmy style and I think it came out really well.”

The album marks a new chapter for the band with the inclusion of bassist Harry Armstong, who joined Orange Goblin in 2021. Describing the essence of the album, Ward explained:

“It is a continuation of what we’ve been doing, and that’s because when we write, it’s a big mixing bowl of all of our influences and favourite artists, and we try and create the perfect band that we always wanted to hear. This album, it’s just more accomplished and mature, I guess.

None of us are spring chickens anymore and we’ve got ten albums under our belts now. I feel like we’re more professional in the recording studio, I feel like we’re better musicians and writers, and now with me looking after myself, I feel like my performance is better as well. It’s all moving in the right direction.”

Primordial Radio is excited to announce Songbox, the cutting-edge music-sharing service co-founded by legendary singer-songwriter Bryan Adams, as an official sponsor for the much-anticipated Primordial General Mayhem 2024 Festival.

Scheduled for April 26th & 27th at KK’s Steel Mill in Wolverhampton, UK, the Primordial General Mayhem is the ultimate gathering for the rock and metal community.

Songbox: The Smart Way To Share Music Privately

Sharing music with important individuals before its release has become increasingly crucial for artists, record labels, and media. The significance of safeguarding such sensitive information is the reason why Songbox has rapidly emerged as a frontrunner in the music-sharing industry. It provides essential features such as real-time file monitoring, top-notch audio and video sharing, and advanced security measures. These tools are indispensable for artists of all calibres, ranging from globally renowned figures to up-and-coming talents, guaranteeing the secure and efficient sharing of their creative endeavours.

Renowned multi-platinum singer-songwriter Bryan Adams, known for hits like “Summer of ‘69,” has become a co-founder of the tech startup Songbox. Adams expressed his enthusiasm for Songbox, highlighting its ability to securely share music in development without relying on MP3 files or physical copies.

Bryan Adams states: “Songbox allows me to share new music that I’m working on in a way that I couldn’t before. I don’t need to send out MP3’s or physical products, so it keeps my ideas and early versions safe and secure until I’m ready to officially release the songs.”

Michael Coll, the founder of Songbox, praised Adams for his immediate contribution to the platform’s feature ideas and design, noting the invaluable insights and experience the artist brought to the project.

“Almost immediately after signing up, Bryan was contributing feature ideas and design suggestions. His insight and experience for something like this has been invaluable,”

Originating from Scotland, Songbox has rapidly grown, hosting over 50,000 tracks and achieving more than 3 million streams. The platform caters to a wide range of users, from globally recognized artists to independent creators and record labels. Songbox enables users to monitor the delivery, listening status, and play duration of shared files. It also supports the sharing of music videos, adding another dimension to its capabilities.

The team behind Songbox includes Bryan Adams, Michael Coll—who brings a background in music and software development—and Co-founder Ciaran O’Toole, known for his experience in leading innovative music startups. The platform has evolved to allow creators to share not only audio but also music videos, photos, cover artwork, and lyrics, facilitating collaboration and pitches to industry professionals.

Content Director of Primordial Radio, Pete Bailey states:

“With experience on both ends of the spectrum in terms of sharing music privately before its official release, I can confidently say that Songbox fills a crucial gap. Having a cluttered inbox filled with various links, some requiring access requests, is not only inefficient but also outdated. Songbox allows me to conveniently listen to all upcoming releases in one centralized platform, eliminating the need to sift through my inbox or deal with expired links.

Gone are the days of sending CDs for private sharing in the music industry, especially since most PCs and laptops no longer even have CD drives. The demand for a secure method of sharing music privately has never been higher, and Songbox is leading the way in providing a reliable system that the entire music industry can trust. We are thrilled to have Songbox as part of the Primordial General Mayhem and eagerly anticipate their progress in addressing a longstanding issue in the music industry.”

Spotify has declared adjustments to its subscription pricing in various key markets, which include the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. According to a report by Bloomberg, the monthly subscription fee for individual plans will see an increase of $1, while duo or family plans will experience a $2 increase.

Additionally, Spotify plans to roll out a new basic subscription tier, priced at $11 per month. This tier will offer access to most of Spotify’s premium features but will exclude audiobooks, a category that Spotify added to its platform in November 2023.

The announcement of these price changes follows a precedent set in July 2023, when Spotify increased its subscription prices by $1 in various global markets. The specific dates for when the new prices will take effect have yet to be announced by Spotify.

Spotify Updates Subscription Model

The adjustments in Spotify’s pricing come amid broader discussions in the music industry regarding streaming service payouts to rights holders. Labels such as Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have publicly advocated for higher streaming fees, pointing to the gap between current pricing models and the rate of inflation. Spotify achieved its first profitable fiscal year in the third quarter of 2023 and reports having over 600 million users.

Despite this, Spotify recently cut more than 1,500 jobs as the music streaming service blamed a slowing economy and higher borrowing costs for the latest round of redundancies at big tech companies.

Daniel Ek, Spotify’s billionaire founder and chief executive, stated that the company had decided to cut 17% of its workforce, marking the third and steepest round of redundancies in 2023, as the company faced pressure from an activist investor.

In October 2023, Spotify announced changes to its royalty payment structure, including a new policy requiring artists to meet a certain threshold of streams before qualifying for compensation. The company also committed to taking action against fraudulent and non-musical audio content.

Returning to the platform, artists Neil Young and Joni Mitchell have made their music available on Spotify once again after previously boycotting the service. This move comes as the service implements its latest subscription price adjustments.

Spotify recently announced a new rock playlist entitled MARROW that declared “Rock Never Dies” in a promotional video.

The upcoming instalment in the Alien franchise, “Alien: Romulus,” (Watch Trailer Below) is set to revive the essence of the original sci-fi horror series. Directed by Fede Álvarez, known for his work on “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead,” the project also sees Ridley Scott, director of the first Alien film, and James Cameron, director of Aliens, contributing as producer and unofficial consultant, respectively.

Echoes of the Classic Alien Films

Initially planned for an exclusive Hulu release similar to the Predator prequel “Prey,” the decision was made to bring “Alien: Romulus” to theatres. The film, releasing this summer, stars Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” and features a cast of emerging actors.

“Alien: Romulus” is strategically set between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” focusing on young space colonizers exploring a deserted space station. Fede Álvarez expressed his intention to capture the original films’ essence, stating…

“I wanted to travel back not just to the style of the original movies, but to the genre of the original movies.”

He emphasized his desire to revisit the horror elements of the first film and incorporate the thrilling aspects seen in subsequent series entries. To achieve authenticity, Álvarez and his team employed film-making techniques reminiscent of the original movie.

Ridley Scott praised the screenplay as “completely different than the other movies.” Álvarez recounted Scott’s reaction after a pre-effects screening, quoting him as saying the film was “f***ing great.”

James Cameron’s involvement added a unique perspective to the film’s development, with Álvarez noting Cameron’s appreciation for the movie and the distinct insights both he and Scott offered. Despite their different approaches, Álvarez described their feedback as “super smart comments, notes, and thoughts on the film and the film-making.”

The cast also includes David Jonsson of “Industry” and Isabela Merced from “Madame Web.”

“Alien: Romulus” arrives amid anticipation for Noah Hawley’s Alien universe TV series, which is set three decades prior to the original movie and involves Ridley Scott. The Alien franchise has garnered over $1.6 billion globally at the box office.

The film is scheduled for release on 16 August.

Exploring Themes of Uncertainty and Acceptance

“We Are Shadows” lyrically captures the current state of the band and the global landscape in 2024, addressing themes of uncertainty and the future. Morgan Lander, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, shared insights into the track’s deeper meaning…

“We Are Shadows is about the uncertainty of a future that we can no longer control, “Lander explains.

“We have come to a critical place in life and in our world, and much like an eclipse overtaking the sun, we are losing the light. The image of shadows slowly fading in the evening darkness, and the analogy of ‘us’ as shadows in the night really illustrates the possibility of slowly fading into oblivion.”

Lander further elaborates on the song’s perspective, stating, “It is not a song of hope, however, it’s a song of coming to terms with the damage we do and acceptance of our fate. We’ve let darkness take hold, and so we are resolved to fade in the night with it.”

The band has also released a video for “We Are Shadows,” inviting listeners to visually experience the song’s themes.

Back in 2001, Alien Ant Farm experienced a significant surge in popularity with their cover of Michael Jackson’s 1988 hit “Smooth Criminal.”

Originally featured on their 1999 debut album “Greatest Hits” under the title “Slick Thief,” the cover gained mainstream attention with its inclusion in their 2001 album “Anthology.” The band’s rendition of “Smooth Criminal,” accompanied by a memorable music video, played a pivotal role in catapulting Alien Ant Farm into widespread recognition. Following the cover’s release, “Anthology” quickly achieved gold and then platinum status in the United States.

Alien Ant Farm Look Back On Smooth Criminal

Despite this, the band’s members have had mixed feelings about the song’s impact on their career. In a recent appearance on the Nu Pod with Joshua Toomey & Ro Kohli, vocalist Dryden Mitchell shared his thoughts on the song’s unexpected release and subsequent impact:

“Our intentions weren’t to have ‘Smooth Criminal‘ even come out… at least not as soon as it did. Again, we recorded it, so we knew what we were doing. We put it on the record. But, we’d seen bands that we all love, climb the ladder. It just felt like each record got stronger, better, and then became a better band. I felt like that was something we envisioned.”

Mitchell expressed initial frustration with the song’s release, a sentiment echoed by guitarist Terry Corso who said, “we had no control” over the situation. Reflecting on the song’s success and its overshadowing effect, Mitchell noted:

“It’s weird to see something in real-time go like lighting a firework, and then be a little bit angry about it, ya know what I mean? So that was a trip. Now, the older I am, I think it was a good thing in hindsight. Again, I had those feelings of, ‘this is gonna eclipse a lot…’ ‘This is almost gonna eclipse the band.’”

Despite these challenges, Mitchell’s view of “Smooth Criminal” has evolved, acknowledging the song’s lasting appeal:

“It makes me happy now. It’s come full circle. I’ve had seasons of it. I remember we did a tour — this was way back — we did a tour where we didn’t like play the song, and that’s kinda lame. I don’t know what we’re trying to do. Again it all kinda stemmed from, ‘well they put it out unbeknownst to us, we’re just gonna not play it.’”

Alien Ant Farm will release their sixth studio “~mAntras~” on April 26th with an extensive US tour also planned in support of the album.

Ferocious Dog has launched their powerful new single, “Blood Soaked Shores,” through Graphite Records, a poignant anti-war anthem that marries an upbeat musical style with deeply moving lyrics. Available for listening below, the track is a testament to the band’s ability to blend contrasting elements into compelling music.

Ferocious Dog Gear Up For “Kleptocracy”

The single is a precursor to Ferocious Dog’s forthcoming studio album, “Kleptocracy,” set to release on May 17. The album features 12 songs including “Blood Soaked Shores” and the previously released “Sus Laws,” which is currently No.2 on the Primordial Top-40 Chart. The album will explore themes of societal injustices and the fight against exploitation and will be available in various formats, including CD, deluxe CD, vinyl, and digital platforms.

Discussing the creative process behind the song, Ken from Ferocious Dog explained:

I’d had this idea for a song for quite a long time, with the four chord progression adding to a different upbeat style in a Major key and usually used for Happy songs.  The catchy and amazing instrumental part was added by Sam Wood on accordion. We were trying lots of intricate Irish traditional tunes but nothing was really working. Sam Wood armed with his accordion says “just give me five minutes” and  came back with this amazing instrumental piece that just transformed the song.

I did say that the tune was straight from the POGUES cookbook and I could see people jumping and dancing around with pints of Guinness held aloft on St Patrick’s Day celebrations with smiles on their faces, but the subject and meaning of the song, if one was to read the lyrics, is a really sad and tragic but uplifting anti war song. To add a bass instrumental, which was played and recorded superbly by Nick Wragg, was my nod to one of my favourite punk bands, RANCID and their bassist ‘Matt Freeman’.

I think that Blood Soaked Shores is a very different sound and energy for Ferocious Dog and their back catalogue of FOLK PUNK music and that is entirely down to the NEW band members putting their stamp on this amazing album.

To mark the release of their thought-provoking album “Kleptocracy,” Ferocious Dog has announced a series of dates across the UK.
