In a landscape of music where the interplay of activism, personal identity, and artistic expression holds significant cultural sway, Bob Vylan emerges as a compelling figure.

Their new album, ‘Humble As the Sun’ marks a pivotal point in the bands journey, blending musical innovation with a powerful message of empowerment and self-determination.

We sat down with frontman Bobby to take a deeper look into the new album, the band’s evolution, community involvement, returning to the PGM and re-defining success based on artistic satisfaction rather than commercial metrics.

The Birth of Humble As The Sun

‘Humble As The Sun’ represents a significant phase in Bob Vylan’s artistic development, highlighting an engagement with themes such as resilience, authenticity, and societal critique. The album is indicative of introspection and evolution, influenced by Bobby’s contemplative practices and a connection to the natural environment. This connection has shaped both the thematic focus and the sound of the album, which features a mix of musical styles including punk and alternative rock.

The title emerged from meditation sessions in a studio space I was fortunate to enter through an acquaintance who soon became a friend. It was in Windy Ridge, a house with a beautiful garden that felt like a slice of nature, with its summertime sun, a cat, and birds. In this setting, I aimed to craft an album signifying the band’s evolution. The environment fostered development, leading naturally to this progression. Engaging in self-reflection and observing nature, especially the sun’s constant presence, unapologetically shining regardless of circumstances, inspired me. I aspired to embrace this trait, refusing to dim my light for anything or anyone.

This concept became the album’s title, embodying a refusal to compromise my essence. Recognizing both my and the band’s achievements, and openly celebrating these accomplishments, the album aims to empower and instill self-belief in listeners. This record, made primarily for us, serves as a reminder of our journey, achievements, and aspirations. On challenging days, playing specific tracks renews my sense of purpose and progress, a sentiment I hope resonates with others.

The album exhibits a variety of themes, demonstrating the band’s interest in exploring different emotional and societal subjects. The tracks vary from confrontational to hopeful, providing a complex examination of the human condition, and offering a comprehensive perspective on resilience amidst difficulties.

Amplifying Voices: Music and Social Engagement

Bob Vylan’s use of music to engage with social issues reflects an approach that prioritizes systemic critique over personal criticism, aiming to create a space for dialogue rather than alienation.

I’ve never been involved in politics, so I question whether entering that arena with good intentions can lead to significant change. The system might not be designed to facilitate the kind of transformations many hope for, even if you were to become a highly progressive leader. The structure seems to be more complex than simply holding a title like Prime Minister and expecting to enact major reforms. It appears not to be set up for that kind of direct influence.

From the perspective of effecting change from the outside, advocating for policy changes requires someone on the inside to listen and act. This realization led me to focus more on community engagement. Participating in community events and initiatives, and even protests against issues like war, tuition fee increases, or advocating for action on international crises, embodies this approach. These gatherings of like-minded individuals create a community united by common goals.

Such activities, while ultimately depending on government action for certain changes, also give rise to community projects and initiatives. This aspect of community involvement is enriching and, to me, represents a significant form of change. I’m more invested in being part of and nurturing these community efforts rather than calculating their impact compared to political involvement. My priority lies in fostering a sense of belonging and contributing to community growth.

The lyrical content focuses on encouraging listeners to confront and reflect on current societal challenges, highlighting music’s ability to influence public discourse. Through songs that narrate stories of struggle and hope, ‘Humble As The Sun’ fosters a sense of collective responsibility and potential for societal change at the grassroots level.

This exploration of social issues through music showcases the profound impact that art can have in critiquing and transforming society. It serves as a potent remedy against indifference and disconnection with the album acting as a reflection of society and a driving force for introspection and activism.

Returning To The PGM As Headliners

In an impressive journey marked by rapid growth, Bob Vylan’s return to headline the Primordial General Mayhem in 2024, after their memorable performance in 2022, signifies more than just a slot on a festival lineup. It illustrates the band’s ascending trajectory and the deep connection they’ve forged with their audience and the festival itself.

Their 2022 appearance at the PGM coincided with the release of ‘Bob Vylan Presents: The Price of Life’ on April 22nd, a day that not only marked a milestone in their discography but also underscored their kinetic performance and the warm reception by the Primordial community.

Reflecting on the experience, Bobby emphasized the significance of hospitality and appreciation in their decision to return to the PGM.

Last time, it was just insane, truly a wild show. I remember the album came out that day. One thing that really stood out was the hospitality, which is crucial. It’s not just about the performance itself but feeling appreciated and wanted, which influences our decision to return to festivals. Everyone was incredibly helpful, especially during load-in and navigating the venue, which left a lasting impression.

The show itself was marked by a massive stage invasion, something I hadn’t anticipated. It was pandemonium but in the best way possible. It created a fun, playful environment, especially for those seeing us for the first time. Adjusting our track introductions for a younger audience, even incorporating references like Paw Patrol, was a unique challenge. After the show, interacting with the audience, taking photos, and chatting, underscored the positive impact of our performance. Returning feels right, especially with another album release coinciding with our performance.

Headlining this time feels amazing. It shows the band’s growth and the recognition of our hard work. I always strive to have a realistic view of where the band stands, so seeing this progression and having it acknowledged is very affirming. I’m excited for the upcoming show, anticipating a fun experience for both returning fans and newcomers, hoping they have an experience as memorable as those who were there in 2022.

As they prepare to take the stage at the PGM in 2024, their story is one of relentless progress, genuine connection, and the transformative power of music. Their journey from an electrifying act in 2022 to headliners in 2024 encapsulates the essence of what it means to grow as artists and resonate deeply with an audience, setting the stage for a performance that is sure to be talked about for years to come.

A Vision of Success: Beyond the Metrics

Bob Vylan’s unique take on success in the music industry shifts away from the traditional emphasis on tangible accomplishments. Instead, they prioritize personal artistic satisfaction and the positive influence it can have on society. This unconventional viewpoint challenges the current standards and encourages a re-evaluation of what success truly entails in the music scene in 2024.

By actively interacting with fans and supporting local record stores, they showcase their dedication to a sustainable and interconnected music community. By highlighting these principles, they not only question the industry’s numbers-driven approach but also promote a definition of success rooted in artistic authenticity, community engagement, and the transformative nature of music.

If I’m happy with my contributions to the world and the art created by Bob Vylan, that’s my measure of success. Not just as an individual but as a collective force within the band. This satisfaction stems from the artistry we express through our work. This sentiment perfectly encapsulates my feelings toward our new album; I couldn’t be more pleased with it. Its current form is exactly what I envisioned, and there’s nothing I’d alter.

The privilege of crafting something of this caliber fills me with a sense of accomplishment. For me, success isn’t quantified by sales, listens, or chart positions. Those aspects, albeit gratifying, don’t define my sense of achievement. The real triumph lies in the album itself—being able to revisit it repeatedly, finding that with each listen, my love and pride in our work only deepens. It amazes me sometimes, the lines we’ve penned, sparking a question within me of how we managed to create something so profound. That’s where I find success within Bob Vylan.
